Women's Committee
The Women's Committee was formed in 2022 to support women’s research priorities and perspectives in the Surviving Memory in Postwar El Salvador initiative. The committee is made up of representatives from four regional Women's Associations that represent hundreds of women from repopulated communities across Chalatenango. The associations that make up the committee are:
Asociación Municipal de Mujeres de Arcatao [Municipal Association of Women of Arcatao, ASMAR]
Asociación de Mujeres Ana Elsy [Ana Elsy Women's Association, AMAE] in Arcatao
Asociación de Mujeres Vueltenses Concepción Miriam [Concepción Miriam Women’s Association of Las Vueltas, ASMUC] in Las Vueltas
Asociación de Mujeres Irma Beatriz Alas López [Irma Beatriz Alas López Women's Association, ACIBAL] in Guancora.
In addition to contributing to the governance of the overarching Surviving Memory project, the Women's Committee also creates written and audio content to reflect on the problems that most affect women in the rural communities of postwar Chalatenango.
This content speaks to memories of resistance to the harsh and unjust situations women have experienced during the war era, the repopulation (1987), and until today with the aim of forging a future free of violence against women.
The committee also supports other research and educational processes by providing their perspective as women organized in the defense of women's rights. Under the auspices of the Surviving Memory project, the committee newsletter series Historias de mujeres escritas por y para mujeres [Stories of Women, Written by and for Women] includes the following publications: Volume 1, “Mujeres y autoestima” [Women and Self-Esteem]; Volume 2, “Mujeres y agua” [Women and Water], and Volume 3, “Violencia contra las mujeres en las comunidades” [Violence Against Women in the Communities].
