Michael Berghoef
Michael is senior faculty, professor of Social Work, and past chair and director of the Social Work Department at Ferris State University (US). He primarily teaches courses in research, theory, and a human rights focused study abroad program in El Salvador. He has also been active on Ferris State University‘s Academic Senate, and has held many leadership positions, including president, vice president, and Executive Committee member, over the past 20 years as a senator.
His research interests include historic memory work, genocide studies, digital sociology, and anti-racist pedagogy. He has presented widely on ethical applications and unintended consequences of technology and social work, the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Objects, international social work, and historical memory.
He has served on several election monitoring and human rights delegations in Central America. He holds a master of Social Work degree and a PhD in Sociology from Western Michigan University (US) and is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. His previous clinical practice focused on mental health and substance abuse treatment.
