Jocelyn Torres

Jocelyn Torres is a PhD candidate in the Anthropology program at York University, Canada. Her current research focuses on how graffiti artists understand the relationship between security and human rights in contemporary El Salvador. Born to Salvadoran parents who left during the Salvadoran Civil War, Torres’ PhD thesis has been influenced by her experience as a Canadian-born Salvadoran. As plans to travel to El Salvador were always accompanied by conversations around “seguridad” (safety), her PhD thesis questions the claim that El Salvador is the “safest country in Latin America” and asks, “Who is safe in El Salvador?”. She holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Toronto, Canada. She is currently doing fieldwork in El Salvador, and she is also a volunteer at the Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen [Museum of the Word and Image], where she has organized workshops on public art.
