Founding Members Committee
Surviving Memory in Postwar El Salvador was established at the inaugural meeting of Asociación Sumpul [Sumpul Association] in August 2017 with the goal of accompanying massacre survivors in their memory and documentation work.
The founding members are a mix of survivors, community leaders, scholars, architects, and artists: Miriam Ayala (El Salvador), Juan Bello (Venezuela/Canada), Pedro Cabezas (El Salvador), Harold Fallon (Belgium), Amanda Grzyb (Canada), Reynaldo Hernández (El Salvador/Canada), Beatriz Juárez (Venezuela/Canada), Evelia Macal (El Salvador/Belgium), Vilma Mejía (El Salvador), Julio Rivera (El Salvador), Felipe Tobar (El Salvador), and Marta Tobar (El Salvador).
The Founding Members Committee all remain active with the initiative, and they meet yearly to provide feedback about Surviving Memory’s projects and ensure that the work remains well aligned with the values of Surviving Memory’s Guiding Principles for Partnership and Collaboration. The committee is co-chaired by Reynaldo Hernández and Evelia Macal.
