Arcatao Memorial Names Plaques

From 2022 to 2023, the Comité de Memoria Histórica Sobreviviente de Arcatao [Committee of the Surviving Historical Memory in Arcatao] worked collaboratively with a research team from Western University and the Salvadoran Canadian Association (ASALCA) to collect the names of people who were killed or died in Arcatao due to the armed conflict between 1970 and 1992. The research became the basis for commemorative plaques and a book called Vivencias y Memorias de Arcatao (2024). Installed in October 2024 in Sanctuary in Arcatao, the plaques present the year of birth, the year of death, and the age of the person at the time of death. In cases where it was not always possible to complete the data, the team placed the letters “NI,” meaning “not identified.” The plaques are divided between those who died in childhood (0 – 17 years) and adulthood (18 years and older). Within these categories, the team subclassified the plaques by year of assassination or death, and then listed each person in alphabetical order according to surname. The plaques honor the memories of people, provide a space for their relatives to visit with them, and offer an imperative to prevent war and political violence from happening again in our communities.
